application/pdf<br />Departmental Bulletin Paper<br />David Copperfield (1849-50) is an autobiographical novel which is narrated by the hero David Tune m this novel will be discussed in connection with Dickens' traumatic experiences, identity, writing, and memory. As the narrator says, "this narrative is my [his] written memory." David narrates his birth (by hearsay), child-hood, school days and matrimony, with his "good memory" and "close observation." The hero's feelings of love and hate, happiness and misery, pride and shame are frank-ly recollected through the first person narrative. For example, in chapter 9,when David is told of his mother's death. Dickens accurately and retrospectively describes the sense of loss of the bereaved. In this scene, not only grief, but the conscious recognition of grief is recounted with Dickens' unique recollective technique. According to J. Hillis Miller, this work is "a novel of memory." Thus, this paper mainly deals with the nature and means of memory, the role of memory in psychic growth, and the process of remembering. The hero involuntarily remembers the past through the !senses of touch, Smell etc. This method is often used by Dickens to invoke recollections, in a manner similar to Proust. However, unlike Proust. Dickens' past cannot be recaptured. The difference and similarities between the two writers will e examined. 続きを見る
