ous\nyear had presented a plan for radical reform of English education in Japan, and Watanabe Shōichi,\nwho repudiated Watanabe’s scheme as fundamentally flawed and defended the conventional\n‘grammarandtranslation’-based approach. Putting their arguments in the historical perspective of the\nEnglish language and Japanese reveals that they take up all the major controversial issues argued\nsince the introduction of English education in Japan, including the translation method vs. the direct\nmethod, communication-orientedEnglish vs. ‘liberalarts education’-oriented English, and whether\nEnglish should be a compulsory subject of education or is unnecessary. Seen from today’s viewpoint,\ntheir discussion is still worth reading because Hiraizumi and Watanabe share, despite the apparent\nconflict, many common ideas that should be carried on as a valuable legacy, admitting thatmany\npoints in their contentions may be critiqued as outdated.
