概要: Emotions regarding second language (L2) writing have been examined using qualitative methods. Current research has explo red how L2 learners present emotions about experiences and specific events through writing using qualitative approaches. However, such investigations have only explored the learners’ emotions through the lens of the textual level. Emotions involve complex feelings and sense, and equally, the writers have unspeakable feelings. To better understand the feelings that can be difficult to articulate, the Focusing (Gendlin, 1978) and Thinking At the Edge (TAE) (Gendlin & Hendricks, 2004) methods can be applied to emotional studies of L2 writing as an innovative tool. This paper focuses primarily on emotional studies of L2 writers. It reviews the author’s pilot study of Japanese EFL (English as a foreign language) writers, and their felt sense of writing in English employing TAE methods. Finally, this paper provides research implications for emotions in L2 writing. 続きを見る

概要: This research aims to explore and analyze the perceptions local residents living in an area with a masjid have of Islam and Muslims. A text mining method was employed to identify components that make up their perceptions, and as a result, six clusters were extracted (“evaluation based on experience in a local community,” “aspect of negative feelings regarding conflict,” “aspect of a typical image regarding radicalism and terrorism,” “aspect of positive evaluation,” “aspect of knowledge,” and “aspect of fear.”). 概要: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of studying aloud on English vocabulary learning by Japanese learner s. It was hypothesized that studying aloud is more effective than silent study. On the contrary, no effectiveness was found for studying aloud. 概要: Aside from being one of the systematically arranged disciplines, mathematics is also a social construction that views hu mans as active subjects in building knowledge through interaction with the surrounding environment. Therefore, in addition to being a medium to enhance students’ understanding of mathematical concepts, mathematics education should also apply the principles of social activity while linking mathematical concepts to social issues. This research is intended to reform mathematics learning so that it does not merely focus on students’ understanding of mathematical concepts, but also improve their quality through the application of ‘social justice in mathematics education’, while at the same time internalising issues related to social justice through the application of ‘social justice through mathematics education’ concepts. This study used action research as the research methodology considering its actionbased themes and characteristics, where the teacher performed and simultaneously reflected learning activities. The findings obtained from this study are: (i) several challenges related to the application of ‘social justice in and through mathematics education’ in mathematics learning area, among others, include the difficulty of changing the teacher’s mindset on how to teach mathematics to students equitably (socially) and how to foster teacher sensitivity in designing mathematics learning that integrated justice issues into mathematics learning; (ii) the implementation of the principle of ‘social justice in and through mathematics education’ in order to improve the quality of mathematics learning is felt to be ineffective because of the teacher’s ability to design and implement mathematics learning involving ‘social justice in mathematics learning’ and ‘social justice through mathematics learning’ remains adequate; and (iii) the application of ‘social justice in and through mathematics education’ has a significant effect on student involvement in mathematics learning. It is characterized by more active students in learning and more enthusiastic students in learning activities, because the material that is discussed very closely with students’ daily experiences.  Furthermore, the findings of this study are expected to contribute to the reform of mathematics education, especially those related to productive mathematics learning, the planting of effective mathematical concepts in students, equitable mathematics learning, and simultaneously internalizing social justice issues through the application of concepts, such as building students’ character. By using the elements in the planning and reflection of lessons, teachers are able to develop a comprehensive guide for improving the quality of their lessons and at the same time internalize students’ character building by using social justice issues. 続きを見る

概要: We explore a new approach to the long-standing issue in linguistics: of whether knowledge of language is innate or not. To this empirical issue, a variety of approaches have been proposed, but the purpose of the present study is not to deny those approaches bur rather to examine a new one for further verification of the innateness hypothesis. Our new approach is based on the methodology adopted in first language acquisition. Concretely, if a second language learner produces a string of words which is neither accepted grammatically in the target language nor attributed to their first language transfer but can be analyzed as a corresponding grammatically accepted structure in another language, then it follows that he/she can access to knowledge of the language to which he/she is never exposed and thus that knowledge of all particular languages is innately available. As a preliminary study, we analyze the relevant errors of Japanese-speaking learners of English and consider future issues for our new approach. 言語知識が生得的であるか否かは言語学における長年の課題であるが、本研究はその課題に対して新たなアプローチを探る。言語知識の生得性という経験的課題に対して、これまでさまざまなアプローチが提案されてきたが、本研究の目的はそれらのアプローチを否定することではなく、新たなアプローチを検討し、言語生得説に対するさらなる検証に貢献することである。新たなアプローチは第一言語獲得で採用されている方法論に基づいている。具体的には、第二言語学習者が、目標言語で文法的に容認されず、学習者の母語による干渉にも帰因しないが、他の言語では文法的に容認される構造であると分析できるような文を産出したとしたら、当該学習者は一度も経験したことのない言語に関する知識にアクセスしたことになり、すべての個別言語に関する知識は生得的に利用可能ということになる。 予備的な研究として、日本人英語学習者が産出するこのような誤りを分析し、新たなアプローチに対する今後の課題を検討する。 続きを見る

概要: During the 1940s the poet Philip Lamantia transitioned away from Surrealism to “naturalistic” poetry rooted in spiritual ity and the mysticism that exists in extraordinary experiences. Some of the subject matter became more sensuous and sociopolitical, and an underlying theme is contempt for government and the evil perpetrated in its name. One of his most overtly political poems, “A Simple Answer to the Enemy” remains applicable today. It makes a case for dissent by laying bare the corrupt agenda of a political order that dehumanizes the public and erodes liberties. Lamantia endorses a revolutionary mindset that rejects mechanistic thinking, aggression, and greed, and encourages us to embrace a philosophy of love and the spirit of compassion. 続きを見る

概要: This study was an attempt to examine the effect of pronunciation training on students’ listening ability. TOEIC listenin g scores of students who took a pronunciation training class for one-semester or two-semesters were compared with students who did not take any pronunciation training. In the first data set, one-semester pronunciation training, both the experimental group and the control group TOEIC listening scores decreased. In the second data set, two-semester pronunciation training, both the experimental group and the control group TOEIC listening scores improved somewhat, but the improvement was not statistically significant. 続きを見る

概要: This study explores one EFL writer’s emotional aspects towards writing in second language (L2) through verbalizing her f elt sense using the Thinking at the Edge (TAE) approach. Data collected include the participant’s autobiography of learning English, TAE-based reflective worksheets, and an individual interview. To analyze the data, thematic analysis (Boyatzis, 1998) in a qualitative method was employed. The findings reveal that the participant showed difficulty in expressing herself clearly in English and remained apprehensive about using English words and expressions properly. However, she realized the importance of English writing, which has promoted her creating a sense of confidence and writing proficiency. This study indicates that the findings obtained by the TAE approach will enhance the importance of seeking learners’ psychological engagement with writing in L2 in a qualitative manner. 続きを見る

概要: Objective: To clarify the current mental and physical state of students 5 years after experiencing the Great East Japan earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident, and to shed light on the practical initiatives and issues faced by yogo teachers in supporting students’ health. Method: In May 2016, we conducted a mail-based questionnaire of yogo teachers at 15 prefectural high schools in Soma District and Futaba District (collectively, “Soso”) in Fukushima Prefecture, one of the areas most heavily affected by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. The questionnaire focused on (1) health and school life of students; and (2) current initiatives and issues faced by yogo teachers in supporting student health. Results: We received responses from 8 of the 15 high school yogo teachers surveyed (response rate: 53.3%).Six yogo teachers (75%) responded that the “students are calm.” However, 6 yogo teachers (75%) recognized a tendency among students towards weight gain and obesity, as well as reduced physical stamina and sporting ability, while 4 yogo teachers (50%) indicated that some students were anxious about their future and career path, and were receiving personal support from the school counselor. The yogo teachers provided support to students while attempting to ascertain their mental and physical well-being through greater health monitoring and questionnaires, and while coordinating with the school physician and counselor. Conclusion: Five years after the earthquake, high school students in the Soso district are now leading a more relaxed school life, but still feel anxious about their future health and career path due to lingering concerns about radiation, highlighting the need for long-term support by yogo teachers. 続きを見る

概要: This preliminary study investigates what grammatical errors are most frequently observed in Japanese EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners even after the six years of English learning. By a series of free writing tasks, 2691 English sentences were collected from 28 Japanese EFL learners. We identified 882 grammatical errors in the dataset with respect to five major types: determiner, preposition, subject-verb agreement for be-verbs, subject-verb agreement for general verbs, and number agreement within a noun phrase. The ratios of the number of grammatical errors to that of obligatory contexts in which those particular grammatical items must occur were 61.1%, 10.9%, 2.6%, 5.7%, and 18.2%, respectively. There are three major findings: (i) Japanese EFL learners make errors in the determiner most frequently, (ii) they make errors in subject-verb agreement more frequently for general verbs compared to be-verbs, and (iii) they make errors in the determiner more often compared to agreement. 概要: Supplementing the classroom with music can make the entire learning process more enjoyable for students by creating enjoyable activities that attract students interests and create an open atmosphere for a communication class. Studies have shown that music can improve concentration, improve memory, bring a sense of community to a group, motivate learning, relax people who are overwhelmed or stressed, make learning fun, and help people absorb material. Music is often used in class by teachers in many different ways to help second language learners acquire a second language. Creating a classroom mood may be one of the desired effects of classroom music. In this paper, I will introduce the possible effects that music can have on an ESL class and present findings from a survey and opinions from Japanese university students in a survey of using background music in an ESL class. 続きを見る

概要: Background and Aims: Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) appears as one of the most effective treatment options for patients with r elapsed or resistant non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). Our aim was to evaluate the role of pre-RIT 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose- positron emission tomography╱computed tomography (FDG-PET╱CT) as an early predictor of 90Y-Ibritumomab tiuxetan treatment response. Methods: We included consecutive 20 patients with relapsed NHL (10 males; mean age, 58.5 ± 8.9 years old) who were treated with 90Y-Ibritumomab tiuxetan. FDG-PET╱CT was performed before and after treatment. Semiquantitative parameters of all measurable FDG-avid lesions were measured and averaged. A measurable FDG-avid lesion was defined as a lesion that showed FDG uptake higher than liver with a diameter more than 1 cm. Treatment response was determined by visual assessment based on a five-point score criteria from FDGPET ╱CT after treatment. Results: Fourteen patients (70%) were classified as responders and the other six patients (30%) as non-responders. All semiquantitative parameters except for MTV demonstrated significantly lower values in the responders compared with the non-responders (p<0.05). Conclusions: Semiquantitative evaluation by SUVmax, SUVpeak, and TLG before treatment were useful as early predictors of 90Y-Ibritumomab tiuxetan treatment response. 続きを見る

概要: A 14-year-old-boy presented with pain and a lump on his left lower leg.Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)revealed a medull ary lesions on T1-weighted images and medullary enhancement after contrast injection. Bone marrow biopsy with curettage revealed an active marrow without evidence of malignancy or infection. The patient had acne on his face and legs. Accordingly, he was diagnosed with chronic recurrent multiple osteomyelitis (CRMO)syndrome. A few months later, the patient developed shoulder joint pain, remittent fever, and an erythematous rash accompanied by a high fever. Blood tests revealed elevated levels of CRP (10.2 mg╱dL) and ferritin (557 ng╱mL), and hypoalbuminemia (2.8 g╱dL).A second bone marrow biopsy revealed hemophagocytosis, but no malignancies. Subsequently,a diagnosis of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (s-JIA) was established. 続きを見る

概要: Cross-cultural experience plays a significant role in second-language (L2) learning (Dornyei, 2001; Brown, 1989). Beisia, a local home-grown retailer and Costco, a wholesaler from California, are located side by side in Maebashi-Minami Power Mall, offering Japanese and American cultural experiences respectively to local Japanese shoppers. Although their store sizes are close to being identical, their corporate identities, target customers, item selections and in-store atmospheres are strikingly different due to their different cultural origins. English-language learners are strongly recommended to go and experience these differences firsthand. Such experiences can help them to have a clearer vision as to why they are learning English. 続きを見る

概要: This joint research paper among five part-time English teachers at Maebashi Kyoai Gakuen University, hereafter called Ky oai University, represents a focused practical application of Action Research based on CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) in the classroom and syllabus. This research builds upon the history and development of CALL at the University, including previous research based on student perceptions of CALL (Deadman, 2014) and teacher’s perceptions and evaluations of multimedia technologies (Mason, 2014). The paper details and investigates how CALL is adopted amongst the teachers in this study, through the existent software Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment). Two of the members of this group have used Moodle, whereas the three other part-time teachers have had limited exposure and experience using it. The aim of this research group is to peer-teach each other in a community of practice, in order that our own technology skills increase, ultimately transferring this to better learning experiences for the students. The paper will use teachers experience, observations and planning to detail the purposefulness of technology in the curriculum; the teacher’s own perceptions of the technology; the subsequent selection, planning and design of appropriate class-specific Moodle applications; and each teacher’s initial evaluations of Moodle as they begin to construct their own Moodle accounts for various classes. A general e-mail was sent to all Japanese part-time teachers who would be interested in jointly partaking in a research paper, based on the above considerations. As such, the members of this research paper are equal in membership and responsibility for the research, as per the ethical considerations of practitioner research (Hammersley, M., Gomm, R., and Woods, P., 2003). 続きを見る

概要: Many universities in Japan have been offering the teaching certificate programs to train highly qualified teachers. Even though graduate schools have set up programs for more disciplinary courses for English language teaching (ELT), few have been developed at the undergraduate school level. Thus, pre-service English teachers can only learn about ELT pedagogical issues in English Teaching Methodology courses. Moreover, ELT in Japan still adheres to a principle of English speakers’ norms and aims for native speakers of English for communication partners. Since English has become an international language or a lingua franca in the globalized society, prospective English teachers must recognize the growing importance of English language variations to teach English as an international language. This paper focuses primarily on pedagogical issues to teach in English methodology classes in accordance with the future reforms of the teaching-training program. To do this, discussions include revision of the Communicative Language Teaching approaches and application of World Englishes into ELT at the secondary school level. 続きを見る

概要: Recently, network operation tools using 3D visualization technologies have become more and more important. Generally, 3D visualized network operation tools are useful for computer network management or operation. However, a development of 3D visualized network operation tools requires advanced technical skills and highly cost. On the other hand, 3D computer graphics technologies become more familiar in recent years because of that computer hardwares and softwares are rapidly growing and obtain high performance. In this research, we have developed basic architecture of 3D visualization system for network operation and management tools, by using an open source 3DCG software ``Blender'' and a programming language ``Python``. 概要: Study abroad programs are very popular with university students in Japan as well as in countries all over the world. The degree to which students return to Japan with improved language proficiency, a wider worldview, better communicative and cultural competence can be greater enhanced by pre-departure preparation. It seems clear that learning about the target country is mandatory for any pre-departure program. However, learning about the home country and culture should also be included in the program to be able to explain about aspects of Japanese life and culture. Knowing about one’s own culture will allow students a greater ability to be receptive to new ideas and situations presented while in their host culture. I will give suggestions about how to help students produce longer segments of speech, how to help students internalize their knowledge, and how to understand their culture more deeply. 続きを見る

概要: Choosing a textbook is one of a teacher’s important jobs. For the class Speaking of Japan, level B3 class, I chose the t extbook J-Talk: Conversation Across Cultures. This textbook matched all the criteria for the class: the level, the topic of Japan, speaking practice, and the goals of what should be accomplished in the class. I will reflect on the content of J-Talk, how J-Talk presented materials and built on the materials in stages with the goal of having students produce extended segments of speech without over-burdening the students. I will explain some of the hurdles I faced while carrying out the activities presented in the textbook and how I managed them. 概要: This paper elaborates on the language teaching experiences of four international educators working in Japan. With divers e nationalities and backgrounds, and as language learners themselves, these professionals’ eclectic approach is the result of many years of teaching within a multilingual and multicultural environment. It is argued that alternative forms of teaching might influence student’s motivation towards speaking, listening, reading and writing in an L2 (second/foreign language). 概要: The classroom is often an arena of Controlled Productive Ability. Within this system, the teacher issues communiques and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat. Further, this ‘banking’ concept of education, extends the scope of action afforded to students only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits. Education is thus seen as a process of depositing knowledge into passive students. Freire (1970) exhorts that ‘…the more completely they (the students) accept the passive role imposed on them, the more they tend simply to adapt to the world as it is and to the fragmented view of reality deposited on them’. This research paper will look at how a class of low-intermediate Japanese learners of English, can become more attuned to Free Productive Ability, the active use of productive vocabulary, in their written English endeavors. Writing itself is a production skill, in that it requires learners to produce language, as with speaking activities. Written English can be used to produce a message that you want others to understand. However, at most stages of the writing process from selecting themes and topics, brainstorming ideas, organizing ideas, drafting a text, reviewing and editing before submission, and finally grading and reflecting, the student is part of a passive process managed by the authority of the teacher. This inhibits student critical thinking and the ownership of their own productive abilities. An alternative is to develop and practice a free productive system, limiting the traditional teacher-centric learning system. At all times, students should be encouraged to think, and tackle problems presented to them on their own. 概要: Background: Vertebral compression fracture (VCF) is a major injury that occurs in elderly individuals. The aim of this s tudy is to predict the functional outcomes of elderly female patients with acute VCF based on their nutritional status.  Methods: A total of 69 female patients with acute VCF were included in the present study. The age, fracture location, body mass index, grasping power, the amount of the patientʼs daily nutritional intake, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score and nutritional status (determined from laboratory findings) were evaluated at the time of admission. After in-hospital rehabilitation, the patients were divided into two groups based on their motor Functional Independence Measure (mFIM) scores at the time of discharge. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors that predicted the outcome. Results: The patients were divided into the high mFIM (score ≥ 79, n=36) and the low mFIM (score<79, n=33) groups. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the amount of the patient’s nutritional intake and the MMSE score were associated with the outcome. Conclusions: he cognitive status and the amount of the patient’s nutritional intake were associated with the prognosis of elderly women with acute VCF. 続きを見る

概要: This study aimed to develop a breast cancer survivor resilience scale (BCRS) and verify its reliability and validity.  W e constructed subscales based on the results of a conceptual analysis of resilience and analysis of factors that promote resilience. We verified the internal validity of the subscales by enlisting the opinion of nursing experts and conducting a preliminary survey. This process yielded a draft scale consisting of 64 items. We then conducted the main study on 230 respondents and a re-test on 37 respondents. The results yielded a scale with two factor classes -“ individual protective” factors and “social protective” factors - and 16 items. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.93 and the re-test correlation coefficient was 0.89, indicating that the scale has internal consistency and stability. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated statistically significant results for construct validity, criterion-related validity, and discriminant validity, thus confirming that these types of validity were sufficiently present in the scale. The BCRS has sound reliability and validity, and that with clinical application, it can become an effective scale for measuring resilience in breast cancer survivors. 続きを見る

概要: Objective: The objective of this study was to develop a “Self-Management Scale of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) during Chi ldrearing Periods” for mothers currently raising children and to examine the validity and reliability of the scale. Methods: Participants included mothers aged 20 to 44 with children six or under. We distributed anonymous, self-administered questionnaires to 1,640 mothers and received 878 responses; 797 were selected for analysis. The questionnaire included 48 items measuring symptoms that accompany PMS during childrearing periods. Results:  Five factors were extracted from the 38-items following exploratory factor analyses using principle and promax rotation: (1) feeling of emotional instability before menstruation, (2) positive emotional changes after menstruation, (3) perception of husband’s support before and after menstruation, (4) reduced energy before menstruation, and (5) unpleasant physical symptoms before menstruation. The scale positively correlated with the Parenting Stress Short Form and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and negatively correlated with the social support scale, confirming criterion validity. The Cronbach’s α (0.79 to 0.94) and split-half reliability ( ρ= 0.74) suggest that the scale is reliable. Conclusions:  The scale developed in this study is valid and reliable, suggesting usefulness for PMS self-management for mothers currently raising children. 続きを見る

概要: Background&Aims:This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance and features of a computer-assisted diagnostic s ystem.BONENAVI versions 1(BN1)and 2(BN2)were used to detect lesions on bone scintigraphy. Methods:Bone scintigraphy of 33 prostate cancer and 27 breast cancer patients with bone metastases was evaluated. Spots detected and analyzed by BN1 and BN2 were compared with those of manual analyses by nuclear medicine physicians. Results:The sensitivity of BN1 and BN2 was 99.2% and 97.0% for prostate cancer and 96.8% and 95.0% for breast cancer,respectively.The specificity was 64.7% and 68.0% for prostate cancer and 65.3% and 75.8% for breast cancer,respectively.Positive predictive values tended to be higher for BN2,and negative predictive values tended to be higher for BN1. BN2 showed fewer false positive spots. BN2 was superior to BN1 for detection of physiological uptake in the head and pelvis in breast cancer and in the cervical/lumbar spine in both breast and prostate cancer. Conclusions:BN2 showed better diagnostic performance than BN1.Understanding the characteristics of lesion detection using each version of BONENAVI may be useful when evaluating new lesions on bone scintigraphy. 続きを見る

概要: Purpose:To evaluate a novel method to diagnose injury of the postero-oblique ligament(POL)complicating injury of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee and its treatment. M ethods:Five POL-injured patients with grade III MCL injury were enrolled. Injury of the POL was diagnosed by valgus stress radiography with an external rotational force applied to the leg at 30r knee flexion (VSRE) and arthroscopy. Results:On VSRE, in the neutral position widening of the medial joint space of the knee compared to the intact side was seen in all patients. Arthroscopy also showed marked widening of the joint space at the MCL and posteriorly to it. Intraoperatively, instability on the posteromedial side of the knee remained following the repair of the MCL alone,but stability was obtained by repair of the POL. No instability of the knee was noted on VSRE even two years postoperatively, and the patients could return to their former sport activities. Conclusions: VSRE was effective for diagnosing injury of the POL. If the POL-injury is detected using this screening test, repair of the POL as well as MCL would be considered necessary. 続きを見る

概要: Background: Risk factors have been reported for osteoarthritis (OA) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructio n, but previous studies did not include a control group, and may have included OA that would have naturally developed even in the absence of ACL injury. This study investigated risk factors compared with the patient’s own contralateral knee. M ethods:Three hundred forty-nine patients who had undergone ACL reconstruction at least 15 years previously were invited to visit the hospital. After exclusion criteria were applied, 40 patients were included in the study, including 16 with progressive OA and 24 without OA. Progressive OA was defined as OA that was more advanced on the affected side than on the contralateral side. The variables evaluated included age at the time of surgery,time from injury to surgery, sex, graft material, cartilage damage, and meniscectomy. Results:No significant differences between groups were seen in terms of age,time from injury to surgery,sex,graft material, or cartilage damage. Meniscectomy was ultimately performed significantly more frequently in the OA group (88%) than in the non-OA group (38%;p<0.01). Conclusions:Meniscectomy was found to constitute a risk factor for the progression of OA after ACL reconstruction. 続きを見る

概要: The efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy(ECT) is superior to that of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS ), particularly for the treatment of major depression with psychotic features. However, ECT is sometimes terminated for several reasons, including patient refusal. Here, the authors present the case of a 57-year-old woman who recovered from major depression with psychotic features with one course of rTMS after ECT was discontinued due to patient refusal. She had been suffering from depression with psychotic features (e. g., tactile hallucinations) for three years prior to admission. During the most recent episode, she was admitted to the authors’hospital and was eventually treated with one course of ECT;however, there was no change in her reported symptoms. Four weeks later,she refused a second course of ECT but agreed to a course of rTMS therapy. She demonstrated gradual recovery from depression three weeks after the initial rTMS therapy session. She demonstrated significant improvement and was discharged from the hospital after 55 days following the first rTMS session. Although the relationship between ECT and rTMS remains unclear, rTMS may be an option for major depression with psychotic features when the patient does not consent to continuing with ECT. 続きを見る

概要: Narratives have emerged in the area of second language (L2) writing and have played a key role as a proper research meth od. Reflective narratives have identified significant benefits by analyzing the writer’s experiences and insider perspectives in depth. Furthermore, stories shared by writers have validity in enriching their understanding further about personal realities and unraveling interpretive accounts with a critical eye. However, few studies demonstrate the findings of writing problems that students encounter and offer suggestions for teaching writing based on students’ experiences and practices of writing in English utilizing their detailed reflective narratives, especially in EFL contexts. This study focuses mainly on broadening possibilities for writing approaches suitable for teaching contexts as teacher development. The data analysis employed the categorization of 15 Japanese EFL undergraduates’ reflective narratives in three phases: the careful reading of all sentences in their reflective accounts of writing in English, the development of a temporary coding system, and the evaluation of the reliability of the coding system. The research findings show that the participants referred to the further importance of written structures (e.g., topic sentences and thesis statements), reader awareness for English writing at the university level, and joint work in the writing classroom. Suggestions for teaching writing are discussed in conforming to the findings of the students’ reflective narratives. 続きを見る

Flavored with a unique brand of crazy wisdom and wit, his poetry addresses the beauty of the natural world and disappointment about humanity’s lack of concern for the environment. This paper examines Sakaki’s environmental themes, especially his objection to river dams, coral reef habitat destruction, and nuclear energy. Although he expresses disappointment, he does not completely despair. 概要: This research paper presents a case-study of the introduction of a specific software technology, Google Classroom, into a College course syllabus. This case study represents an example of an innovation successfully diffused in a foreign language learning environment. The research details one potential use of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) at Niijima Gakuen Junior College, hereinafter referred to as Niijima College. The success of the application of this software is judged by the experiences and reactions of the students, and of this researcher by way of questionnaire and observations of student collaboration, peer-support, and completion of assignments and tasks. This paper presents the first English language CALL research at Niijima Junior College and will hopefully lay the foundation for future use of and development of CALL at the college. The paper adds insight into how relatively cheap and easily accessible computer software can be adopted at the tertiary level for localized and appropriate student-centered learning. A notable outcome of this potential adoption is the successful diffusion of the technology, namely Google Classroom. The paper will use the recorded observations and results from this paper to plan and implement the same course for the 2017 Spring Semester, planning and design more appropriate class-specific Google Classroom applications for better student learning experiences. 続きを見る

概要: In this study I compared difference of communication styles of Asian students and East European students in order to gui de students to be better communicators in English communication classrooms. It has been a while since we started to hear the waves of globalization in schools in Japan. It is not an exception for our institution, Tokyo University of Social Welfare, that now we recruit students not only from Asian countries, but also East European countries. It is often the case that English becomes the language to communicate among those international students. It has been observed that those international students communicate only in English if they are new comers and not having enough confidence to communicate in Japanese. In those opportunities to interact with students who are from Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Nepal, Poland and Bulgaria, they transfer their own cultural background and knowledge to communicate in English. In other words, there are certain differences in manners and ways to communicate. Drawing on conversation analysis (CA), the current study presents analysis of students’ utterances referring to turn-taking, sequence organization, lexical choice, and story telling. The study sought to find difference in utterances, reactions, and attitudes. For further discussion, the researcher suggests implications for language teaching as well as classroom practice in different English competence levels and culturally diverse students. 続きを見る

概要: In linguistic research, theoretical linguistics, psycho-linguistics, and foreign-language learning have been studied in their own ways. To establish their organic relationship, I will propose a model of knowledge cycle. A driving force for the cycle is sentences containing grammatical errors made by foreign-language learners (e.g., *John like apples). The ungrammaticalness of each sentence can be tested by psycho-linguistic experiments such as acceptability judgments, reaction-time tasks. Attested ungrammatical sentences can be used for theory construction in theoretical linguistics. Insights gained through such error analysis can be applied to devise effective input for efficient learning of foreign languages. Based on further learning, learners produce a new set of ungrammatical sentences, which drives the cycle again. In this paper, I will describe the proposal and discuss its theoretical implications. Particularly, I will adopt the generative syntactic framework and analyze some of the ungrammatical sentences collected from Japanese learners of English as a foreign language. The results show that among three factors (Merge, interface conditions, and natural laws), interface conditions, particularly conceptual-intentional (CI) interface conditions, are crucial to account for the ungrammaticality. 続きを見る

概要: This research paper details the extensive use of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) for a content-based reading syllabus at Gunma University, through the software program Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment ), a free and open-source software learning management system used at Gunma University.   The research basis of this paper is within the sphere of Action Research , as a valuable professional development tool (Nunan, 2001) based on this researcher’s perceived valuation of the system and how it could better aid students to perform better in and be more motivated towards their English language and reading studies, introduce new technological skills and abilities, and aid teachers in better preparation, teaching and assessment of reading classes. Moodle enthuses that the Lesson Module ‘enables a teacher to deliver content and/or practice activities in interesting and flexible ways...teachers can choose to increase engagement and ensure understanding by including a variety of questions, such as multiple choice, matching and short answer.’ (Moodle, 2016). Therefore, this paper will ascertain whether the syllabus achieved a greater engagement and enjoyment by the students, and ensured better comprehension and understanding of key tasks and instructions. 概要: Bearing in mind the Japanese context, this paper elaborates on how maintenance of international children’s heritage lang uage (HL) might contribute to the spread of bilingualism in the country. It also expands on the ways these young learners see themselves as well as how they are seen by their families and within their academic context. It is argued that young HL learners’ propensity towards bilingualism might not only pave these children’s way to the acquisition of a second and/or foreign language, but also contribute to future developments in foreign language learning among the monolingual sectors of society. 続きを見る

概要: Abstract  Studies have attested to the potential of both immersive and non-immersive virtual reality environments in the health and medical field. However, side effects of using an immersive virtual reality environment such as those utilizing head mounted displays have been reported. The aim of this paper is to conduct a preliminary investigation into the EEG features of both immersive and non-immersive virtual reality environments. 概要: This research paper focuses on student peer interactional relationships in a tertiary level classroom setting in Japan. The research is based on the use of one piece of technology, Microsoft PowerPoint, to illustrate student peer interactional relationships during presentation tasks throughout the 2015 Spring Semester. The application of the particular software used in this research is of little importance, in that any piece of software could be used to investigate student interaction. The important findings of this research indicate that students can be made aware of their self-affirmation through an application of sociolinguistics and an introduction of critical pedagogy that encompasses a significant reduction in the influence of the traditional ‘teacher’ role to the benefit of student empowerment. The role of the student changes from being the passive object to that of a more active Subject role, as that of the ‘teacher,’ or better termed ‘facilitator,’ dispenses their traditional paternalistic, authoritative Subject position, in favor of being one that helps to bring about ‘…an outcome (as learning, productivity, or communication) by providing indirect or unobtrusive assistance, guidance, or supervision,’ on the part of the ‘facilitator,’ as it is defined in the Miriam-Webster dictionary (2015). For students to adopt a more active role requires a change in study habits, which requires more effort. 概要: Aim : This study aims to examine the trends and issues in Japanese and foreign research papers on nursing care for young women with breast cancer. Methods : We searched the online version of the CINAHL and Ichushi-Web Ver. 4 for the keywords “breast cancer”, “young women”,and “nursing”or“care.” Results : 14papers were chosen for analysis. The research themes pertained to sexual and reproductive health, cancer experience, the role of the family, and rehabilitation needs. Conclusion : This study found that research on nursing for young women with breast cancer was still in its infancy. We expect that,in the future,foundational research on young women with breast cancer will be undertaken, not only overseas, but in Japan as well,and that there will be active efforts to create nursing support methods for these young women. 続きを見る

概要: A Japanese herbal medicine SJS is made of hot water extract of Chishimazasa leaves (Sasa kurilensis (Ruprecht) Makino et Shibata: SS), and ethanol extracts of Japanese red pine leaves (Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc.: RP) and Ginseng roots (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer: PG). The aim of this study was to assess the modification by SJS of the intoxication and drunken frenzy models in terms of discrete shuttle avoidance behavior in mice. The response rate (number of shuttles) was increased by ethanol (2 g/kg p.o.), but decreased by the combined administration of ethanol + Ca-cyanamide (10 mg/kg p.o.), an anti-alcoholic drug. Although SJS, freely given 10% solution for 4 weeks and longer, or acutely administered at doses of 10 and 20 ml/kg p.o., did not change the ethanol effect, it significantly recovered the decreased response rate by ethanol + Ca-cyanamide. A similar significant recovery of response rate was demonstrated by PR and SS, but not by PG. These results suggest that SJS alleviates the ethanol-induced drunken frenzy and/or hangover without significant effect on the ethanol intoxication (disinhibition). 続きを見る

概要: As a part of activities to improve the skills of technical staff members through exchange with staff in other discipline s, mechanical engineering staff members were assigned to a Chemistry and Materials Science Experiment Course (qualitative analysis) offered to first year students of the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science. Asking the mechanical engineering staff members to perform assignments as efficiently as experienced chemical engineering staff without any preparatory measures would have been unreasonable, in addition to the fact that the assignment already put mental pressure on both the group dispatching the mechanical engineering staff and the group receiving them and caused feelings of uneasiness in both groups. To dispel the uneasiness, various efforts were repeatedly made; for example, teaching staff members elucidated and explained in detail to the mechanical engineering staff members about the four themes of the experiment course, which they would work on over the course of a semester, and the mechanical engineering staff members conducted preparatory experiments with the teaching and chemical engineering staff members. By its nature, the experiment course required its participants to conduct extensive observations. It was felt that there were many experiment phenomena which could be noticed only after they had been explained. These included cases where, for example, observation was very difficult because barely visible precipitate formed in the solution inside a test tube, but became transparent when the test tube was shaken, or where after the precipitate had dissolved, it transformed into crystalline precipitate when it was recrystallized. Furthermore, the mechanical engineering staff members were taught that in some cases, it was very important to observe different deposits and compare them with each other. During the regular experiment classes, the staff members are very busy carrying out their duties, such as preparing chemical reagents, receiving reports, and monitoring and managing students’ safety and the progress of their experiments. Test tube racks for small test tubes used for the department’s student experiment classes were blackened, and some 3 mm long sections between test tube holes were corroded and had disappeared due to more than 30 years of aging deterioration and degradation by chemicals and other materials. However, the experiment staff members could not afford to take the time to solve the test tube racks’ problems due to being so busy and under budgetary constraints. The test tube racks were not commercially available goods, but hand-made products created by a craftsman. Therefore, even if a decision to replace them with new ones was made, arranging for the replacements would be problematic. According to the results of the preparatory experiments conducted by the staff members, it was hard to detect a minute amount of precipitate as well as to observe the colors, crystallization and other precipitate characteristics with the test tube rack because the rack’s upper plate creates a shade while the blackened bottom plate reduces reflectivity, leading to an insufficient amount of light reaching the test tubes inserted in the rack. While the wooden test tube racks were hand-made by a craftsman, the authors proposed new designs from the point of view of the mechanical engineering staff, using stainless steel, acrylic and other plates to produce prototypes, and a laser beam machining tool to finely process acrylic plates to mass produce new rack units to be used in class. In this report, the authors describe their activities to design and manufacture new acrylic test tube racks, and use them for an experiment class. Furthermore, the authors report that the acrylic test tube racks contributed to improving test tube observation results as expected and that this technical staff exchange between different disciplines was successful. 続きを見る

概要: Background:Apolipoprotein M (ApoM) is bound to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in plasma, and HDL has anticoagulation eff ects. However, the association between ApoM and biomarkers of coagulation was unclear. Therefore, we investigated relationships between ApoM and biomarkers of coagulation. Methods: Serum samples from 233 Japanese participants including with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, or healthy controls were analyzed. Serum ApoM levels were measured using Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay(ELISA). Results:Analysis of all 233 participants showed that ApoM levels were positively correlated with age (r=0.284, p<0.001), total cholesterol (TC;r=0.477, p<0.001), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C;r=0.234, p<0.001) and lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C;r=0.331, p<0.001). Higher ApoM levels were correlated with shorter activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT;r=-0.226,p=0.001) and prothrombin time(PT,%;r=0.326,p< 0.001). Separate analysis of the 115 healthy controls showed that ApoM levels were positively correlated with age, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C, and higher ApoM levels were correlated with shorter PT. Conclusion:Serum levels of ApoM may influence biomarkers of coagulation. 続きを見る

概要: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic condition with long term psychological and behavioural implications. Self-c are is the cornerstone to adapt into this condition. Sociocultural appropriate self-care practices are vital aspects in nursing care. The article reviews literature on self-care among adolescents with T1DM considering sociocultural context and to discuss existing nursing care and its current issues within the Sri Lankan context. A systematic literature survey was conducted to review empirical studies from 2000 to 2014. Electronic databases PubMed and CINAHL were utilized. Personal interviews and relevant websites were accessed to explore existing nursing care and its current issues in Sri Lanka. PubMed displayed 1,065 articles for the key words‘nursing’ and ‘Type 1 diabetes’while CINAHL displayed 31 articles for the same.‘Perceptions’,‘associated characteristics’, ‘school behaviour’and ‘family behaviour’were identified as main categories in the literature. The nursing oriented articles relevant to self-care’, ‘sociocultural’, ‘Sri Lanka’and ‘Type 1 diabetes’were insufficient in number. Scientific studies pertaining to the field need to optimized. The unavailability of specialized nurse educators for childhood diabetes is a noticeable issue. The implementation of effective nursing interventions considering Sri Lankan sociocultural context is recommended. 続きを見る

概要: Background:To know actual conditions and a balance between food intake and energy expenditure of each of the elderly in the super-aged society is very important. Aim:To determine the resting energy expenditure (REE) of the elderly residing in the“Roken”. M ethods:For Study 1,REEs of 47 elderly people in the Roken were measured. For Study 2,REEs of 22 patients who were admitted to a general hospital were measured. Results:In Study 1, REE of the elderly people in the Roken ranged from 523 to 1,628 kcal/day/body;the mean value was 909 ± 239 kcal/day/body(mean± SD) and 21.6± 4.5 kcal/kg/day. A discrepancy between REE and dietary energy intake was observed. In Study 2, REE of patients in the hospital widely ranged from 589 to 2,549 kcal/day/body;the mean value was 1391± 459 kg/day/body(mean± SD). Conclusions: The mean value of REE of the elderly in the Roken was 74% lower than that of the healthy individuals in previous reports. The observed discrepancy between REE and dietary energy intake suggested the need for improvement in the effective absorption of nutrients from the digestive system, which may be more important than food intake 続きを見る

概要: This paper attempts to elicit an intertwined relation between philosophy and education by revolving the discussion aroun d three constituents of human knowledge: rationality, normativity and justification. This exploration takes the form of a close critique of Harvey Siegel’s work. Siegel’s analytical-philosophy-inspired defence of traditional epistemology and accordingly his preferred views on education are, to some extent, successful in construing an essential relation between philosophy and education. Yet, this paper argues that his approach does not overcome the philosophical cul-de-sac of how to reconcile the epistemic capacity of rational justification with the non-epistemic character of truth. It is then claimed that, in order to move beyond the predicament, we need to reconfigure the components of what it is for humans to know. The paper draws on Martin Heidegger’s distinction between earth and world as well as ―more substantially―on Hilary Putnam’s recent idea of the interpenetration between value judgements, descriptions of fact and human linguistic conventions. The watershed that divides Siegel’s defence of traditional epistemology and this paper’s argument is a sensitivity towards what might be called the social and historical aspects of human knowledge. 続きを見る

概要: 初等教育における外国語教育導入に際して、異文化理解能力の習得が目標の一つとして声高に提唱されている一方で、現時点では児童の異文化理解能力を測定するテストが、日本語でも英語でも存在していない。本稿は、児童の異文化理解能力測定テスト開発を目的と する研究の途中経過として、現存する異文化理解能力モデルの適用可能性に関する諸問題を考察した。 本研究において、先行研究の精査と小学校教員を対象とした聞き取り及び質問紙調査の結果明らかになった、テスト開発に際しての問題点は以下の通りである。(1)成人の異文化理解能力に関する理論や尺度を、児童の心理特性を測定する際に適用することは不適切である。具体的には、既存の異文化理解能力モデルの「態度」項目は児童においても測定可能であるが、「知識」項目や「比較解釈するスキル」項目を、児童を対象とした測定テスト開発にそのまま適応することは避けるべきである。(2)テスト自体の信頼性および再現性に関しては、児童の認知能力や客観性の欠如といった観点から、児童本人に測定テストを受けさせることは妥当ではない。 上記の考察より、既存の異文化理解能力モデルを基に、児童の異文化理解能力測定に特化した質問項目を抽出し直し、加筆修正を行う必要性が明らかになった。また、再現性や妥当性という実用上の問題点が明確になったことより、当初の研究案であった児童を回答者とするテストではなく、教員を回答者として児童個々人の異文化理解能力を観察評価させる形式に、大きく方向転換をすることとなった。 続きを見る

概要: “There are no mistakes on the bandstand” is the title of a music performance and talk by jazz vibraphonist Stefon Harris (2011), on the website ‘TED.com.’ The emphasis of his theme is the fact that mistakes are not necessarily mistakes, exemplified in his world of jazz performance and improvisation, and that what one may consider a mistake may actually be a new opportunity. As Harris states in his performance, “I have no idea what we’re going to play. I won’t be able to tell you what it is until it happens,” summarizing what every foreign language speaker expects and what every native speaker often forgets. As such, teaching and learning expectations are often mismatched between structured classroom learning tasks and real world experiences. Just as Harris points out, we have no idea what we are actually going to say until it, a dialogue, takes place. But, just like a jazz musician, we need to be confident enough in improvising to continue the music, or in this case, language communication. We may have some rough idea based on previous experiences, whether through study or previous communication, but fundamentally we won’t be able to predict what we will say to someone else until it, the intended utterance for whatever reason, happens. We cannot predict the unpredictable. As such, students as language learners and teachers as language facilitators must become aware of the fundamental need to improvise in any given situation. 概要: Joseph Neesima spent the vast majority of his life in the pursuit of improving himself. As a boy and an adolescent in Edo, his early education focused on Japanese and Chinese teachings and then broadened to include Western knowledge that he gained from reading Dutch texts. Budding interest in Christianity motivated the desire to translate the Bible into his native tongue, so he spent ten years abroad immersing himself in American culture, understanding Western education methods, and developing his Christian faith, all the while improving his linguistic aptitude. Unquestionably, he made great strides. The documents that Neesima left behind offer insight into his overall English language competence, and this paper is a brief analysis of some of the letters that he wrote in English while abroad. Exploring these letters reveals many of the profound experiences, friendships, and motivating factors that influenced his English language ability, but ultimately, all of these were superseded by his charismatic character and commitment to personal and spiritual improvement. 続きを見る

概要: This research was sparked off by listening to the Miles Davis recording “What I Say”, a twenty one minute piece from the jazz album ‘Live Evil’, which was recorded in 1970. This track features Miles Davis and his ensemble of Gary Bartz, John McLaughlin, Keith Jarrett, Michael Henderson, Jack DeJohnette and Airto Moreira. Bob Palmer, of Rolling Stone music magazine, stated that “…in an area of music where individual virtuosity is the rule rather than the exception, give-and-take between players becomes all important” (Palmer, 1972). ‘What I Say’ could be a metaphor for student speech. The song doesn’t have an easily determinable meaning as it is purely an instrumental, as such without lyrics, but as with the jazz genre, it carries emotional resonance for each listener. Pérez- Sobrino (2014) in her research paper “Meaning construction in verbomusical environments: Conceptual disintegration and metonymy” looks at how different levels of multimodal meaning are rendered into verbo-musical environments. Pérez-Sobrino (2014) focuses on a particular strategy of musical meaning (re)construction, the way in which the different patterns of conceptual disintegration that structure the multimodal expression trigger the activation of metonymic reasoning at the conceptual level, in her study through classical music. Meaning (re)construction is here understood as a two-step process: the first involves the configuration of certain cues to structure the multimodal manifestation (product), and the second relates to the cognitive operations triggered at the conceptual level by those multimodal cues (process). In the case of another musician actually playing with Miles Davis, multimodal cues may trigger cognitive operations at both the conceptual level and through the activation of metonymic reasoning. In the case of someone only listening directly to a jazz recording, such as that of Miles Davis, cognitive operations may be triggered at the conceptual level. Atypical English language learners at college level may not find jazz music the slightest bit interesting, and when time is a premium in teaching, it is unrealistic to try to install some form of jazz music appreciation in class. In order to circumnavigate this problem, it is better for the teacher to understand such products and processes and apply these notions to actual lessons. Jazz improvisation, such as that in the recording ‘What I Say’, offers a new insight into teaching English, through improvisation itself. It offers a valuable alternative to rigid lessons and is easy to plan and apply. As with musicians learning how to improvise, teachers need to see through apparent ambiguity, an integral element in the genre of jazz, and clarify processes, meanings and products; and constantly question themselves. Such awareness and focus in lesson planning and adaptability and improvisation in class will allow them to pass on their ideas to the students themselves. 概要: We studied laser-induced melting and decomposition of asbestos-containing slate and confirmed the effectiveness of CO2 laser irradiation. A comparison between continuous-wave and pulse CO2 laser irradiation revealed that pulse irradiation, which provides advantages in equipment cost and energy consumption, was as effective as continuous-wave irradiation. We conducted laser irradiation experiments on asbestos-containing slate at different pulse intervals and laser power levels, measured melting depths, and confirmed the absence of asbestos fiber by surface and cross-sectional observation of molten areas. We observed evaporation of molten material by laser irradiation, and elemental analysis showed that the overall material rather than specific elements evaporated. Although it was possible to detoxify asbestos, laser treatment has yet to be optimized for low-evaporation conditions. 続きを見る

概要: We attempted to melt and decompose asbestos in asbestos-containing slate panels solely by laser irradiation using compact laser irradiation equipment while varying the laser output (50 W), the number of pulses per inch (ppi) and the travel speed of the laser beam window. We found that slate panels could be decomposed and melted, even with the compact equipment, by irradiating both sides of the slates. No specific elements evaporated selectively during the melting. 概要: Tool use is one of the goal directed actions infants learn efficiently through interacting withadults. This study exami nes the roles of infants’attention to an adult’s hand and joint engagement with an adult in learning tool use, and describes their development in understanding the intention of the adult. In Experiment 1, an experimenter inserted a toy car into an opaque tunnel,then showing how to extract the car by using a hammer. Forty-nine 6-,10-, 12-and 19-month-olds were then asked to get the car from the tunnel.19-month-olds could use the hammer as a tool by themselves,while more than 80% “Failure” was recorded with the 6-, 10-and 12-month-olds. In Experiment 2,the opaque tunnel was replaced by a transparent one. Thirty-five 6-, 10-, and 12-month-olds participated. Success in joint engagement was more observable with the transparent tunnel compared to the opaque one in 10-and 12-month-olds. 10-month-olds grasped the goal (the car coming out), connecting it to the actor (or her hand holding the hammer), through joint engagement with the adult. These results indicate that interaction with an adult and making the function of a tool transparent to infants both facilitate infant understanding of adult intention and causality with objects. 続きを見る

概要: English education as part of university-level liberal arts curricula requires both academic English literacy education ( which includes instruction in how to give an academic presentation) and instruction in practical English conversation (Nihongakujutsukaigi, 2010a, 2010b). To learn how to give a presentation, students must develop not only their knowledge of the target language, the organization of presentations, and the contents of their presentation; they also need to develop nonverbal communication skills. This study aimed to investigate the effect of nonverbal communication competence through three types of instruction: deductive, inductive, and a mix of both. The results showed that learners attained a good performance for posture. Inductive instruction was the most effective for making eye contact, and deductive instruction had the most impact on the performance of gesture. The mixed method ranked last for both eye contact and gesture. The results show that no matter what form instruction takes, it helps learners improve their nonverbal communication competence in oral presentations.<br />高等教育機関である大学の教養英語教育では、実用的な会話能力の教授だけでなく、アカデミック・プレゼンテーションの教授を核とするリテラシー教育が求められている(日本学術院 , 2010a, 2010b)。本稿では、プレゼンテーションのより効果的教育方法を探るため、非言語コミュニケーションの明示的教授、非明示的教授、両者を取り入れた教授を比較した。姿勢ではどの教授方法も達成度が高かった。アイコンタクトでは非明示的教授、身ぶりでは明示的教授の効果が一番高く、両者を取り入れた教授の効果は共に最下位であった。入り交じった結果が得られたが、何らかの形で教授をすることにより、学習者の非言語コミュニケーション能力の向上を期待できることが分かった。 続きを見る

概要: As students are exposed daily to various forms of media, it is no longer possible to pretend that this form of communica tion and information exchange belongs exclusively to the world outside the classroom. On the contrary, by making use of media resources within the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom, teachers become better equipped to bring content and context to life. 概要: Morphine (10 mg/kg s.c.) accelerated the ambulatory activity of mice for 3 hr with a peak effect around 1/2-1 hr after the administration. A sensitization to the morphine-induced stimulation was induced when the mice were repeatedly given morphine at 3-day intervals, and they were individually put in activity cages of 20 cm in diameter for 3 hr after each administration. The sensitization attained a plateau by the 4th administration, and the 3-hr overall activity counts at the 4th and later administrations were 2.2-2.4 times as high as that at the first administration. However, neither marked change in the latency to the peak effect nor prolongation of the stimulant effect was demonstrated even in the morphine-sensitized mice. The mice allowed ambulation in the activity cages during post-morphine period of 1/2-1 hr showed a strong sensitization as high as that in the mice given morphine with the free ambulation for 3 hr. Whereas, the limited allowance of ambulation during the post-morphine periods of 0-1/2 and 1-3 hr resulted in only partial or no sensitization. The repeated administrations of saline with free or limited ambulation caused no significant change in the sensitivity to morphine. These results suggest that the repeated experience of both morphine effect and the resultant ambulation during the early post-morphine period of 1/2-1 hr, i.e., immediately before the peak effect, highly contributes to the induction of ambulatory sensitization to morphine in mice. This period may be related to the development of the reward effect of narcotic analgesic drugs such as morphine and heroin which is the main factor of abuse and dependence liability. 続きを見る

概要: Background & Aims : The aim of this study was to investigate dual-task interference on maximum grip force while performi ng a grip and lift task. Moreover, the influence of handedness on maximum grip force, and the relationship between maximum grip force and subjective difficulty were also investigated. Methods : Eleven subjects took part in the study. The study experiment was comprised of one single task and three dual tasks: 1)grip and lift task, 2)grip and lift task with single-leg stance, 3)grip and lift task with eyes closed,and 4) grip and lift task with calculation. The experiment was conducted in both hands separately. Maximum grip force of four fingers (dominant/non-dominant×thumb/index finger) was compared among tasks and between hands. Results : We found that maximum grip force was increased mainly by the cognitive dual task in both hands,and that there was no difference between hands in the same task. There was a positive correlation between the perceived difficulty and maximum grip force in the dominant hand. Conclusion : Our results suggest that maximum grip force could serve as an objective index for evaluating dual-task interference in upper extremity function. 続きを見る
