概要: Departmental Bulletin Paper
The purpose of this essay is to propose a renewed concept of civilization more suited t o the twenty-first century that followed the one remembered for plunder, exploitation, and the destruction and sins of war. By way of illustration, Samuel P. Huntington’s The Clash of Civilizations is reviewed and analyzed in the light of the proposed concept of civilization. The much criticized book, for all its insight, is characterized by its insidious attachment to the residua of the “modern.” The human society now desperately needs clues for finding the way out of the predicaments the old “civilizations” have placed it in. A new wineskin in time must be of critical help for the advancement of humankind. 続きを見る

概要: Departmental Bulletin Paper
This essay is an attempt to organize a perspective for education as a form of communication through which information, the vital components of the mind, is imparted to students. Since the modern society seems to be at the end of its tether with nature endangered, war and conflict perpetual, and the way out still unseen, it is necessary to create a new concept of civilization with which to transcend the modern and incorporate awareness of that concept in education. 続きを見る

概要: Departmental Bulletin Paper
This essay reexamines the well-known 1975 debatebetween Hiraizumi Wataru, who the previ ous\nyear had presented a plan for radical reform of English education in Japan, and Watanabe Shōichi,\nwho repudiated Watanabe’s scheme as fundamentally flawed and defended the conventional\n‘grammarandtranslation’-based approach. Putting their arguments in the historical perspective of the\nEnglish language and Japanese reveals that they take up all the major controversial issues argued\nsince the introduction of English education in Japan, including the translation method vs. the direct\nmethod, communication-orientedEnglish vs. ‘liberalarts education’-oriented English, and whether\nEnglish should be a compulsory subject of education or is unnecessary. Seen from today’s viewpoint,\ntheir discussion is still worth reading because Hiraizumi and Watanabe share, despite the apparent\nconflict, many common ideas that should be carried on as a valuable legacy, admitting thatmany\npoints in their contentions may be critiqued as outdated. 続きを見る

概要: Departmental Bulletin Paper
This essay is an attempt to search for ways to improve college English education in Jap an. It first analyzes\nseveral popular fallacies concerning English education, by applying the common understandings extracted from\nthe Hiraizumi-Watanabe debate of 1975. Second, it takes up the long-running argument specifically between the\npractical, communication-oriented school and the ‘liberal arts education’-oriented school to explore the\npossibilities for resolving the bitter divide that has haunted the history of English education in Japan. Lastly, the\nmerits of the traditional translation method in English education are reevaluated and reaffirmed as a good way of\npinpointing students’ weak points, having them get inside English texts, and expanding their mental and\nintellectual faculties. All these perspectives are discussed in view of the information society. 続きを見る

概要: Departmental Bulletin Paper
This essay presents a compact perspective for deepening our understanding of the issues of\n“liberty”and “equality”in the controlled and surveillance society. After looking briefly at the\nconceptual history of“liberty”and “equality,”the argument explores how grievous infringements\nof liberty and equality are not necessarily confined to what is called totalitarian societies, but that\nthey may well even emerge in democracies. Finally,a few points are suggested for the more likely\nrealization of liberty and equality in the future 続きを見る

概要: Departmental Bulletin Paper
This essay is an attempt to reevaluate George Orwell’s 19 84 from the perspective of th e\n“surveillance society”and “liberty.”The characteristics of the totalitarian regime of“Oceania,”\nthe country where the protagonist works for the Party presided over by “Big Brother,”are\nexamined to support the argument that most of them could emerge even in a democracy. The\nstudy also discusses the significance of 19 84 in the history of dystopian literature. 続きを見る
